Congratulations on choosing to study French! This beautiful and elegant language is of worldwide importance and a link to a rich culture and amazing history. Knowing French will give you many benefits throughout your entire life and it sets you on your way to becoming a global citizen. In today's interconnected world, you will undoubtedly be in touch with people from all over the world, and much of this contact is almost certain to occur in your future work environment, if current trends continue.

Speaking more than one language is a skill which will increase your marketability. Schools and employers tend to prefer candidates who speak one or more foreign languages. Even though English is widely spoken in much of the world, the fact is that the global economy depends on communication. When dealing with Francophone countries, someone who speaks French will have an obvious advantage over someone who doesn't. Check how many job openings in the US require or desire knowledge of French at the site Netscape Career Center (over 400 at the moment that I am writing this)!

Your trips to French-speaking countries (see the slide show below!)will also be greatly enhanced in both ease of communication and friendliness if you speak the language. In addition, learning another language can also help you to communicate with local immigrant populations here at home (there is a large French community in the Detroit Metropolitan area due to the automotive industry, including a French school).

You will have a new tool that will serve in so many domains of your life: personal communication, travel, academic research, reading the foreign press, browsing the Internet, listening to a larger variety of music, etc. In addition, you will have trained your mind to begin thinking in another system, giving you flexibility in conceptual thinking and problem-solving. During the acquisition of this foreign language, you will gain many cultural insights which will broaden your horizon and help make you a more tolerant citizen of the world.
